The African Presence in the English Archives

Students have greatly enjoyed learning about history using these new digital tools. It excites them and ruptures the more traditional course deployment by allowing a more participatory and collaborative learning environment. I first introduced this new teaching method in an upper division Blacks in the English Archive course. The students and I digitally mapped American and British black subjects including Phyllis Wheatley, Ottobah Quobna Cugoano, Frederick Douglass, Olaudah Equiano and others. The students really appreciated this approach, and it provided a refreshing method to learning about these new subjects and learning their biographical narratives.
