Digitizing the Travels of Dr. James E. Shepard

The Dr. James E. Shepard digital StoryMap explores the travels of NCCU Founder Dr. Shepard from 1895 to 1947. The project emerged from discussions between Dr. Jarvis Hargrove (now at East Carolina University) and Dr. Tony Frazier, following their participation in the NCCU-Duke Digital Humanities Fellows program. One of the main research objectives of this project is to explore Dr. Shepard as a local, national, and international figure. A sample from this project, the 1907 Dr. Shepard global travel map, is featured on the NCCU 110th Anniversary celebration website. The NCCU university archivist Professor Andre Vann has joined the larger project as a collaborator.

Dr. Frazier on the 1907 Map: Between 1904 to 1908, Dr. Shepard served as field superintendent for Work among the Negroes for the International Sunday-School Association. The 1907 annual meeting of the International Sunday-School Association meeting was held in Rome, Italy May 18-23, 1907. Dr. Shepard was the only African American guest speaker on the entire program during the Rome convention of the Sunday-School Association. The title of Dr. Shepard's speech was "Work Among the Negroes in America." Before arriving in Rome on May 17, Dr. Shepard began a three-month global tour of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Professor R. B. McRary of Lexington, NC, who was the grandmaster of North Carolina Masonic Lodge accompanied Dr. Shepard on this world tour. McRary was also a graduate of Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C., formerly co-educational, which became a college for women in 1926. Professor McRary expressed in 1909, that Dr. Shepard began discussing his vision for the school while on this 1907 trip abroad.
